Frost Flowers

Some ice formations we found in the holler last week…

“Ice ribbons”

These form from plant stems and dead wood.

IceRibbon1

IceRibbon2

IceRibbon3

“Needle Ice”

Needle ice emerges from dirt.

IceNeedles1

IceNeedles2

“Frost flowers” form when the water in the ground –or plant stem or dead wood- is above freezing and the air temperature is below freezing. The best time to see them is after a heavy, soaking rain followed by a freeze.

If you live in a dry climate, you may not ever see these –but maybe you can create your own…during freezing temperatures, place outside: a pot of wet soil or a piece of dead wood that has been soaked in water.

No Meteor Shower In The Smoky Mountains Tonight

Well, we just came in a few minutes ago from watching the Perseid Meteor Shower –and we never saw the first one!

It’s very overcast, but we did see Mercury (?), an extremely bright “star” in the east/southeast.  That was neat –it was the only light in the sky, until the clouds covered it up, and it reminded us of the Bible star. :)

There is a hazardous weather outlook for the Smokies Mountains and there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms all week, but you never can tell what the weather will do ‘round here –so we’ll try watching for meteors again tomorrow.

If you’re in the area and are looking for really good place to go watch the Perseid meteor shower, the observation tower across from Lookrock, on the Foothills Parkway, is a wonderful place to do so.
