Free Audio Story: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

This week’s Living Books for the Ears program from HomeschoolRadioShows.com:

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain -a delightful half hour audio adaptation of Twain’s classic story which was originally broadcast on My Favorite Story, a syndicated radio program that aired in the late 1940s.

This week’s program also includes an audio of the classic children’s story “Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks With the Circus” by James Otis.

These programs are in MP3 format and will be available through Monday, June 7, 2010.

Free Classic Children’s Songs

Homeschool Freebie of the Day has some classic children’s audio for us today:

Fun & Music Down on the Farm (mp3 audios) –First up is a jolly version of the classic children’s song, “Oats, Peas, Beans”; then a visit with “The Little Crooked Man” (of the Mother Goose rhyme) with his crooked cat and crooked mouse; a journey with “Uncle Don Down On The Farm”, and finally we’ll stop in for a delightful concert put on by a little mouse and a whole menagerie of barnyard animals.

Grand Ole Opry Recordings (MP3 format) -These recordings are from the 1940s and 50s and feature such artists as Red Foley, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Eddie Arnold, a very young Minnie Pearl and many, many more. There are over 50 shows that you can download individually -or get the entire collection in a zip file.

FreeClassic TV: Grand Old Opry April 28, 1956 -Hosted by Carl Smith. Guests include Chet Atkins, Minnie Pearl, Flatt and Scruggs, June Carter and others. Show is almost an hour long and is available in MPEG4* and Ogg Video* formats. Files are very large**.

The Coon Creek Girls: Flowers Blooming In The Wildwood (MP3 format) -The Coon Creek Girls were an all-female Appalachian string band, song was recorded about 1936.

Obed Pickard: Sally Goodin -Recorded in 1929, Obed Pickard was one of the first Grand Ole Opry performers. Download MP3 or listen online.

Today’s resources from Homeschool Freebie of the Day are about the famous ride of Paul Revere -which happened 235 years ago this Sunday, April 18th:

Listen My Children -A great half hour audio story about Revere’s life and influence, including the events of that fateful night, as originally dramatized on the radio program “Cavalcade of America”, in December, 1952. Also included is a PDF “Listening & Discussion Guide” that accompanies the audio program plus an audio reading of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s classic poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride” as performed  by the great actor, Frederic March.

Homeschool/Education Resource: Free And Low-Cost Old Time Radio Shows For Presidents Day


“Mr. President” was an old time radio show that aired in the 40’s and 50’s about events in the every day life of American presidents. To challenge listeners, the identity of the President in each episode was not made known until the end of the show.

The Internet Archive has quite a few episodes of “Mr. President” available as free MP3 downloads:

Old Time Radio Programs, Mister President –Download individual episodes of approximately 7mb each, or the whole collection of 29 episodes, which is 54mb.

(If you have slow internet service, a download manager is very helpful. I use the free Orbit Downloader to schedule large and multiple files for downloading overnight.)

Music For Thanksgiving is a nice little collection of hymns and classic folk songs in midi format.

At The Story Home, you can download an audio of Thanksgiving On Grandfather’s Farm –a short story by Maud Lindsay from “More Mother Stories”.  (I haven’t listened to this one yet.)
