You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make Dad happy on Father’s Day. Give Dad a gift from the heart -make him something or do something for him!

Here are 11 frugal gift ideas that will make Father’s Day special for your Dad:

1. There’s an old saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” -so why not cook something special for Dad? Make his favorite dish, a special dessert or even breakfast in bed.

2. Make a personalized BBQ apron. Pick up a plain canvas apron at Hobby Lobby (or another craft store) and decorate with fabric paint -children can add their handprints and a personal message such as “#1 Dad”. This idea can also be used with plain T-shirts or BBQ mitts.

3. Create a themed gift basket. Does Dad like to fish? Fill up a pail or fishing hat with hooks, sinkers, lures, bobbers and fishing line. Is Dad a carpenter? You could fill a nail apron with a new tape measure, carpenter’s pencils, chalk and a small tool or two -perhaps a chisel or hammer. For more gift basket ideas, check out 15 Creative Gift Basket Ideas For Men.

4. Give Dad a framed family photograph in a homemade picture frame.

5. Make him a photo album, scrapbook or collage.

6. Clean Dad’s car or truck.

7. Compose a poem or write Dad a letter telling him how much he means to you.

8. Create a CD of his favorite music or some old radio shows. The Internet Archive’s Old Time Radio section has a ton of old adventure series, mysteries, westerns and more -all of which can be downloaded for free.

9. Does Dad like to read? Homemade, laminated bookmarks would make a nice gift.

10. Clean out the garage or shed.

11. Make Dad a homemade card and fill it with some love coupons full of thoughtful things you can do for him (like some of the to-do ideas above). Don’t have time to make your own love coupons? Check out the Father’s Day Love Coupons on my Free Printables page.

Just A Mom

A woman, renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. “What I mean is, ” explained the recorder, “do you have a job or are you just a ….?”

“Of course I have a job,” snapped the woman. “I’m a Mom.” “We don’t list ‘Mom’ as an occupation, ‘Housewife’ covers it,” Said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall.

The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, “Official Interrogator” or “Town Registrar.”

“What is your occupation?” she probed.

What made me say it? I do not know the words simply popped out.

“I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in your field?”

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn’t) in the laboratory and in the field,(normally I would have said indoors and out). I’m working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more about the satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the Clerk’s’ voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants — ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than “just another Mom.”

Motherhood! What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

Does this make Grandmothers “Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations”

And Great-grandmothers “Executive Senior Research Associates”?

I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts – “Associate Research Assistants.”

Please send this to another Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, and other friends you know.

Has your child been “diagnosed” with “ADHD”?

You might want to check out these very timely resources brought to you by Homeschool Freebie of the Day and Mike Adams “The Health Ranger”:

Live with Dr. Fred Baughman: The ADHD Fraud (PDF ebook) – In the last 30 years, the field of psychiatry has transformed childhood into a disease through the label of ADHD. Dr. Fred Baughman, a pediatric neurologist and fellow of the American Association of Neurologists explores the reasons for this in this transcribed interview. He is one of the few neurological experts that is willing come forward with the truth about ADHD and the mass drugging of America’s children. Have you ever wondered why other countries don’t have this explosion of mental illness in their kids? Have you ever wondered why people in your parent’s generation didn’t have these problems? The answers are all right here in this interview.

PLUS

The Honest Food Guide (PDF chart) – An outstanding chart on food choices & how they affect your family. Offers genuine nutritional information, not watered-down information designed to boost the sale of processed milk, beef and grain products.

Note: These links are no longer available at the Homeschool Freebie of the Day website, please see updated links below.

My personal experience with what “they” call “ADHD”:

Processed foods, especially food colorings and corn syrup, will affect a child -we got rid of the cheetos, hard candy and soda pops and there was no more bouncing off the walls, anger, and self-destructiveness. Every once in a while, my children get a soda or candy as a treat -and it takes two days for them to calm back down.

Exercise is also important -we noticed long ago that our children are calmer and can concentrate better if they get plenty of exercise such as running, jumping rope, hiking and long walks.

Drugs aren’t good -what about the side-effects? I’ve seen many children turned into walking zombies after being put on “ADHD” drugs.

Educate yourself, get the book and food chart -they’re free, so you have nothing to lose.
