Favicons and Logos

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I’m still picking up tips about blogging and running a website and one thing I learned recently was how, and why, to add a  favicon and logo to my site. I decided to post about it with the hope it will help someone else.

What is a Favicon

It’s the little picture beside the web address in your browser.

What is a favicon and why should you have a favicon for your website?

How To Create A Favicon

Free Favicons

There are all sorts of free icons and favicons out there…

…but I couldn’t find any I liked, so I made my own.

Make Your Own Favicon

First I drew my picture in Paint.net (free) using a 64×64 canvas size. I then resized it to 32×32 for my logo and 16×16 for my favicon.

The favicon has to be an icon file and Paint.net doesn’t have the capabilities to save it in that format so I used Irfanview (also free) to open the 16×16 image and save it as an icon.

If you don’t want to do all that, there are some free online favicon generators you can use to create one:

Adding Your Favicon and Logo to Your Site

Next, I uploaded my images to my site and added the code. I followed these instructions to add the favicon:

How to Create a Favicon

I had a little more trouble adding my logo to the left of my title. The instructions that actually worked for me are here:

Add Your Logo to FTW Themes

I did have to adjust the margins a little and to do that I used the “Edit CSS” function of Web Developer Tools for Firefox, then copied the code into my theme’s style sheet. Firebug can also be used to edit CSS, I just haven’t tried it yet.

Voila!

Let me know what you think. :)

Have a wonderful day,

Robert E. Lee

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Today is the day the United States observes Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, but it is also the birthday of another great American, General Robert E. Lee.

picture of young Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee was born on January 19th, 1807 at Stratford, Virginia and was the youngest son of major-general  Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee.

Robert entered West Point in 1825, graduated 2nd in his class four years later, and was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. He distinguished himself  in the Mexican War, served as superintendent at West Point, commanded a calvery regiment in West Texas and suppressed the raid by John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859.

Despite being against secession and slavery, Lee was unwilling to fight against his home state of Virginia. In 1861, Robert E. Lee rejected Lincoln’s offer to command the Union Forces and resigned his Army commission. He went to Richmond where he assumed command of Virginia’s forces and was eventually named commander of the Confederate Armies in 1865.

Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, leading to the end of  the Civil war.

We have fought this fight as long, and as well as we know how. We have been defeated. For us as a Christian people, there is now but one course to pursue. We must accept the situation.”

After the war, Robert E. Lee became president of  Washington College in Lexington, Virginia and urged southerners to keep the peace and accept the outcome of the war. “Make your sons Americans.” he pleaded.

Robert E. Lee died on October 12th, 1870 after a brief illness and is buried in the chapel he built on the campus of Washington College, which was re-named Washington and Lee University after his death.
